What is the planning vision behind the largest design city in Israel?
These days, accelerated construction is underway in the suburbs of Jerusalem, with the end result being a well-designed city never seen before in the world. Shlomo Gartner, the international architect who designed the city “Design City”, gained experience working on dozens of projects in Israel and around the world and used it for the project.
Gartner coordinated multidisciplinary teams to design master plans and urban, provincial, and metropolitan master plans for the Planning Administration and other entities. In addition, he has planned unique projects such as a master plan for artificial islands in Israel’s maritime space, a bi-national master plan for Israel and Jordan for the Valley of Peace (the Red Sea Canal), a master plan for the Jerusalem metropolitan area for 2050, master plans and town planning for employment complexes. He has also taken part in large commercial projects in Israel and abroad, designed some of the best-known hotels in Eilat (Queen of Sheba, Dan, Herods, Magic Palace and others) and even participated in large projects of dedicated industry, employment complexes, residential areas, and mixed-use complexes.
From the physical space to the virtual space
“Leading the planning of a huge project entitled ‘The Design Capital of Israel’ is a unique and challenging process, especially at a time when life habits of consumption and activity are changing from the physical space to the virtual space. The operation of a huge commercial and entertainment center on a national level must be based on being an experiential, romantic, exciting and inviting space for repeat visits,” says Shlomo Gartner. “The physical architectural construction, with its open and covered spaces, constitutes the infrastructure for a variety of complementary elements, such as: diverse vegetation, running water, background music, artists in local street performances, a central performance stage, stands and seating areas along the streets and squares – all these will add to the special atmosphere, which develops and changes throughout the day and week, where the planning-design creativity and the creativity of operation and management combine together.”
